[Apologies for the tardiness of the news. I've been in Florida for the last two days, on a job interview. The interview appears to have gone well, though I still have not gotten an offer. Meanwhile, on the basis of another phone interview, a company in Georgia wants to fly me out. We'll see how it goes. --Ed.]

Our Gelhausen samples for the last couple of days have been typical for the end of a week. Thursday's numbers were down by about 10 clients from our peak and Friday's numbers were down by another 150 clients or so. The weekend's numbers will likely be a bit low as well, though as we increase in size, "low" is a moving target.

Devlin is down and at news time your editor has no information on the situation. Clarke's pipeline scripts to connect to the hidden hubs have been dying for no clear reason, and that server may need to be retired if the situation can't be resolved. There have been some connectivity problems with zelazny over the past few days, problems with Australia and occasional problems with Europe. Even with all of these odds-and-ends difficulties, though, the network still seems fairly stable.

OPN needs applications for hidden hubs in the US, in Europe and in Australia. Connectivity should be excellent, latencies should be low. The sponsor should be willing to work with us fairly actively and should have the capability to have configuration changes made at the border routers with rapid turnaround. The network is not large, but it's expanding, and reliability is essential. If you're interested in submitting an application, please take a look. Thanks.

Mirabilos announces the creation of #deutsch. It's not a project or a support channel but an "allgemeiner deutschsprachiger Kanal," a generic channel for German-speaking users. OPN needs more language coordination; multilingual German-speaking users are invited to help with translation services.

The editor wishes to thank the many people who have helped him and his wife cope with his recent difficulties. Thanks to jim, starlady, xeno42, William Fong, gregday, Garrett, kristina, msachs, snotty, Solarmax, Sweetooth, Wintersun, Joris Bontje, Aravind Gottipati and Jesse Vincent. Thanks to all of the great folks at LiNUX.COM for their personal support. Thanks to everyone I haven't mentioned; it's my memory, not my appreciation, that's at fault. The list is very long. 8)

Today's Gelhausen sample hit a new record at 3,530. The top of the chart has rescaled from 3,500 to 4,000. :) Your editor is finally beginning to get some firmer leads on jobs. He'll be interviewing tomorrow. Wish him luck.

The staff of OPN hopes you have an excellent evening.

Today's Gelhausen sample was down a bit at 3,413, due to an afternoon problem with zelazny, which became unavailable due to erroneous BGP route advertising. Services became disconnected in the process and sagan lost a number of users.

Meanwhile, your editor is pursuing several job leads, still nothing nailed down. And we've received about 100 emails from various developers and users as a result of agl's posting. We could use more feedback, particularly from developers. Please take a look.

Have an excellent morning!

Yesterday's Gelhausen sample was a respectable 3,495, a new record for the network. With just six more users, the chart will rescale.

Yesterday saw some minor slowdowns as a number of our secondary servers experienced sporadic packet loss, but the day was otherwise uneventful.

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far with the job hunt and contributions. I've decided we have one of the nicest collections of community people on the planet here. Thanks especially to jim for his timely assistance in the area of health services. I'm beginning to get more solid leads on possible jobs, though nothing is certain at this point. I'll keep you posted.

Gratefully yours,

Today's Gelhausen sample value was 3,048, a typical weekend value. No major events have happened in the last 24 hours, but we'd like you to know that progress is being made on the server upgrade project and we expect to be converted by late September.

We'd also like to announce the launch of #HObbyists, a channel devoted to model railroading and other hobbies, and interfacing such hobbies with Linux and other Open Source systems.

Finally, we'd like to thank agl for his posting about OPN on Debian Planet. About 50 developers and users have sent us emails so far. Thanks to everyone for letting us know you like the job we're doing. Your comments will help us when contacting potential corporate contributors and may be useful in documenting the public purpose of the network for our 501c3 application. If you're a developer on an open source / free software project and you find OPN useful, we can use your input, too. Please take a look.
