OPN Network Policies
The following policies govern the use of the Open Projects interactive network and describe what we expect from our users. Thank you for using OPN!
- General Policy. Open Projects Net is a special-purpose network. It exists to provide facilities to communities involved with free and open source software and similar pursuits, as well as to encourage an environment in which community members can improve their communication and coordination skills for the betterment of all and in the public good.
Illegal activities, warez, porn, noticeably heavy mp3 trading, hax0r activity and various types of antisocial behavior are all off-topic on Open Projects Net and may result in your being barred from access. Please respect our rules. Thanks.
- Open Proxies, IIS and Appeals. Like many interactive networks, OPN has had its share of problems with denial-of-service attacks. As a result, we've had to develop a variety of measures to reduce the impact of such attacks. OPN may block access to users whose IRC clients run on hosts with open proxies, IIS servers or other categories of software determined to present special risk to our server environment. We reserve the right to use automation to attempt to detect such software on your host, as you connect to our servers, while you remain connected to OPN and on occasion during post-connection analysis. Your use of the network signifies your acceptance.
If you've been affected by a connect limit or a server ban, please feel free to appeal via email to . Sometimes users are affected by problems not of their own making. We'll try to remove the ban or provide an exception if possible.
- Channels and Projects. We welcome users and developers in our target communities. OPN hosts both official and unofficial support channels for a variety of projects. If you want to open a coordination or support channel for your project, we'd be happy to have you on the network. We'll make a special effort to work out channel name issues with you and existing groups on the network.
We also recognize that we are not the only interactive network for community projects. If you decide to move your channel off OPN, the chances are very good that our users will want to continue discussing and supporting your work on an unofficial basis after you leave. As part of the terms of use, we ask that you return the channel to staff in this case so that we can find a new registrant or shut it down if appropriate. We're happy for you to make note of the move in the channel topic on the OPN side for several days. But after that, please use your project web site to point people to the right place, so that everybody gets the message.
