Friday was a fairly quiet day on the net, other than at one interesting moment when two Australian servers simultaneously left the network. They were restored fairly quickly. The Gelhausen sample dropped a bit to 3,045 in the usual end-of-the-week downturn. Thanks to Jeff McDonald for his contribution yesterday. We're now exactly $807.41 away from being able to start the non-profit registration process. Please consider making a contribution if you find the network useful.

Have a great weekend.

Yesterday's theme was "server shuffle." Servers tolkien and carter were down due to routing issues in the evening and came back after an hour or so. Herbert has been experiencing problems with hubbing (we've moved it to pratchett) and with reverse DNS. Merril has returned. Sagan will probably be moving today. It may come back as a public server or it may become a trust group server or a hidden hub. Pohl is moving as well. The new server will become a backup hidden hub for the US under a different name. The sponsor will provide a replacement pohl at a different location to take its place. We're also considering a couple of European servers.

Yesterday's Gelhausen sample was down a bit at 3,196, but still very good. We are now $817.11 US away from being able to start the registration process for our non-profit corporation. Thanks to bignose for his kind contribution. If you'd like to contribute as well, we'd appreciate it a lot and this would be an excellent time to chip in.

Your editor discovered it is indeed possible to get a new US passport in just over a day if you live in San Francisco. He's told it takes a bit longer elsewhere in the US. Have a great Friday!

Wednesday was another quiet day. Thanks to Intercarve Networks for their fund contribution; we're now $866.69 US away from starting the registration process for our non-profit corporation. Any and all contributions gratefully accepted. Our Gelhausen sample hit a new record, but certainly not a large one: 3,236, one more client than the previous record.

Your editor got very little sleep yesterday and spent the afternoon renewing his expired passport for a rush trip overseas, going from fax machine to passport photographer to passport office to courier. He'll find out by the end of today whether it really is possible to get a new passport in a day and a half. Wish him luck.

Tuesday was a fairly quiet day on OPN. Some ping outs occurred but the network was relatively stable. No major errors or problem situations. :)

Thanks to Timothy Meushaw and strider for their timely contributions to the OPN Fund. We are now $890.84 away from starting the process of registering a non-profit corporation to maintain OPN. Now would be a very good time for you to make a contribution yourself, if you haven't done so.

Happy honeymoon to our staffer brw and his new bride. Thanks to OPN's many supporters, and here's hoping you enjoy the rest of your week.

OPN remains $963.59 away from being able to begin the process of setting up a US non-profit, tax-exempt ("501c3") corporation to keep the network running. Thanks to all who have contributed so far. Remember that we have no "sugar daddies," no large commercial sponsors for the OPN fund, no grateful corporate behemoths waiting in the wings to help us finish this process.

We're dependent on you. If you haven't done so, please help by making a contribution.

Alert readers will note that the web site has been reorganized further. The about section, suitably modified, now doubles as the home page. Click-through readers from OSDN sites will arrive there first.

Monday might have proved a fairly quiet day, had several servers not split at once (with no obvious significant routing in common). Your editor decided to tweak aspects of the server pipe. At the same time, he updated the configuration line governing the /admin command, which gets changed very rarely (perhaps every six months). The server is rather picky about the format. Your editor tested the new configuration on a non-critical server and then placed it into the automation, getting caught by the same error that always catches us, and shutting down zelazny, our main hub, in the process.

After bringing back hubbing, we finished tweaking the pipes to the hub, to discover that our Gelhausen number for the day had been taken during the earlier server splits and was "out in the ozone" at 1,935. Oh well, we all have our days.

23 April 2001

Sunday's Gelhausen number was 2,958 (up slightly from Saturday). Open Projects Net is currently $963.59 away from being able to begin the process of setting up a US non-profit, tax-exempt ("501c3") corporation. Anything you can contribute to the OPN Fund~ today would be greatly appreciated. We are getting really close. Our PayPal email address is: gpbf1zlh at lilo dot nu.

Some splitting again today on our non-hidden European hub and some servers with ongoing problems, but things were fairly quiet. Lackey has returned but is not yet back in the rotation.

Your editor was awakened around noon to handle a channel clone flood in process on #debian. This attack was annoying but handled pretty quickly. Handling a clonebot attack is essentially a bookkeeping operation, boring but necessary; your editor logged new AKILLs and went back to sleep. Late evening another skript kiddie attempted to message flood him with some interminable number of clone bots and this problem was resolved before other users were attacked. And in between, another staff member found 5 sub7 bots and retired them.

Have a great day!

22 April 2001

Yesterday's Gelhausen sample dropped down to 2,932, not unusual for Saturday. Your editor has made changes to the web site, including the "How to Contribute" section, now called How to Help. We've split out the monetary contribution page and the "operating fund" will now be called the OPN Fund to reflect its more general role. In addition, the page on sponsoring a server is a bit more cordial. Finally, the IRC server message of the day (command /motd) has been changed to reflect the public nature of the network as we begin the journey towards 501c3 status.

Thanks to starzz for her contribution just before news time. The OPN Fund is now exactly $988.03 US away from its initial goal of $3,600.00, counting the $1.59 in PayPal fees not yet recorded in the ledger. We need your help to get the rest of the way. Please contribute to the OPN Fund today.

Have a great week!
