Welcome to the end of the week! Friday was a relatively quiet day, no major problems. Numbers were down a bit, as usual for the end of the week. No major news other than that your editor is pleased that the week is over.
At press time we had another contribution to the operating fund: thanks, Twilight1, for your second contribution this month. OPN will also be needing about three 1-U or 2-U boxes for colocation in the near future. If you'd like to donate hardware or if you want to contribute to the operating fund, please take a look here. We appreciate your help.
Yesterday marked the beginning of the latest debian bug hunt party for woody. User and developer participants are welcome. Please bring your bugs by #debian-bugs. The party goes on through Sunday.
In other news, neV3RMINd has started a support channel for SCSI issues, which he is calling #scsi. He'll be around a bit later today and it'd be nice to impress him with the number of participants, so if you're interested, please drop by.
Your editor hopes to get a bit more done on the dancer-hybrid project over the weekend; also, robster has been granted access to the testbed servers and we hope they'll be back up in reliable order soon. If you're interested in participating in development, please stop by or click on #mistertoad. We can also use help with banner ads.
That's the news for now. Have a great morning and a great weekend! Don't forget that we can run your new channel or project announcements if you'll either "/msg memoserv send Editor [content]" or stop by #openprojects before 23:00. All times on the news pages are UTC. Take care.

An excellent Friday morning to all. Your editor is back in the pink. :) Yesterday was another good network day. We unofficially exceeded 3,000 users, though the official record (Andreas Gelhausen's sample) was only 2,977. Still, the network continues to grow. There's one fly in the ointment; the purchase of Fastlane Net means that we'll need to find new hubbing to replace barnes. Since we are not yet ready to set up hidden hubs, the arrangements will have to be temporary.
In other news, thanks to tdengler for picking up work on the MAP command. This should be particularly handy for network staff during emergencies, since its output is not dependent on scripts which vary from client to client. A version of the CTCP blocking user mode has been checked in which should prove handy in conjunction with client cloaking; and yours truly is considering finally adding some form of a TODO item for "invite for time period".
If you'd like to get involved with coding on dancer-hybrid or with making banner ads, please stop by or click on #mistertoad.
Yesterday was a good day for operating fund contributions: Thanks to an anonymous donor and to Michael Champlain at Vtracks.Com for their help. If you'd like to contribute, we'd appreciate your help too; please take a look on on the contribution page. Again, thanks to our fund contributors so far for keeping that effort moving.
For a wonder, we've actually managed to go to press at midnight per our original intent. The daily news is closed out at 23:00; please drop by #openprojects or "/msg memoserv send Editor [content]" to have us include your project or new channel announcement on the daily news. All times are UTC. Have a great morning!

Yesterday was a relatively smooth day, though your editor was home with some sort of bug. I'm feeling much better and should be back in the normal routine today.
Server pohl is back in service and it appears zheng will probably follow in the next day or so. The CSS validation problem mentioned in yesterday's entry has been resolved, thanks to Andrew Francis, who pointed out the presence of some extra lines at the beginning of the HTML (an artifact of SSI which we managed to remove) and an erroneous comment in the CSS file.
Nothing new to report on the server conversion front, particularly since this correspondence online time today was something at odds with the timezones of other participants. But please check in if you're interested in working on dancer-hybrid or on banner ads, or we'd welcome a contribution to the operating fund.
Thanks, by the way, to Kenneth Schwartz and irc-html.com for a second contribution on 12 March. Apparently PayPal missed sending out an email on that one. We appreciate the help.
Please send us any announcements for tomorrow's news by 23:00; they can be dropped by #openprojects or sent via "/msg memoserv send Editor [content]". All times on these news pages are UTC. Have a good Thursday!

Sympathies to those among us who suffered through layoffs and shutdown notices yesterday. Here's hoping the situation in the industry will improve soon.
The network is running pretty smoothly. We've added a new server, bing, in Oslo, Norway. Welcome to our sponsors at the Norwegian Linux users' group NLC. And thanks to BhaalWK for helping us prep brin for dancer-hybrid.
Work on the new server code continues. Thanks to Peidran for his work on a CTCP-blocking user mode to close up a potential hole in user cloaking.
The new flat code tree has been getting out of date and we'll be regenerating it soon, but your editor has not had time to sit down and go over the debian directory patches. However, I'm getting constant questions and we are seeing daily code submittals, and material is getting checked in with some regularity to the old tree. To get involved, please drop by or click on #mistertoad for more information.
A CSS validator error has cropped up with the OPN web pages. It does not appear to cause problems with any known browser and it may be simply a result of more strict style sheet checking. Or it may be an error. In any event, if you're comfortable with such things, please help us determine and correct the problem. Again, drop by #mistertoad to discuss it.
A new channel, #mpeg-audio, has been added for programming work on MPEG 2 layer 3 audio. Many thanks to hadess for registering the channel. New channels typically take a while to reach critical mass, so if you're involved with rio500 and libpdmp related development, please stop by fairly frequently and don't be afraid to idle.
The #samba channel is available for discussions of configuration issues with Samba, "...an open source software suite that provides seamless file and print services to SMB/CIFS clients...." The channel has been very quiet. If you want to help people configure their Linux boxes to take over some of the functionality of the closed-source Windows file sharing features, please consider spending some time there.
No word yet on our new bannering sponsor. If you'd like to either run banners or make some new ones for us, please check here.
As usual, the deadline for announcements is 23:00 and they can be dropped by #openprojects or sent via "/msg memoserv send Editor [content]". All times on the news pages are UTC. Have a great Wednesday morning!

Minor DoS activity occurred yesterday, but things continued pretty quiet. We've returned bear to service and may have a Norwegian server available later this morning.
Your editor was stuck in meetings and was unable to confirm, but we should be seeing some increased statistics if one of our sponsors has started carrying our bannering ads. We won't actually know until later this morning when the logs roll over on ibiblio.
Work on the dancer-hybrid conversion proceeds apace, we hear but have not yet confirmed that both invite and ban channel forwarding are working. More patches need to be done, including work on user cloaking. please come by or click on #mistertoad if you'd like to play.
No contributions have been logged to the operating fund in the last few days, so now would be a very good time to make a contribution if you've been using OPN for some time for tech support or project coordination and feel you'd like to chip in. Please take a look on the contribution page for more information. Many thanks to our contributors so far!
Once again, if you'd like us to run a new channel announcement or a project announcement of some sort, please stop by #openprojects or "/msg memoserv send Editor [content]" before 23:00. All times on these news pages are UTC. Thanks again and have a great Tuesday morning!

Sunday was about as quiet as quiet can get. Very few problems. More patches were applied to the old dancer-hybrid-6 tree and the gap widened a bit with the new tree, so we'll probably regenerate the new tree this morning. There may be a special news release around early afternoon, as it appears that a bit more bannering on other sites may bring more traffic our way starting tomorrow. Announcement cutoff for this news page remains 23:00, announcements should be delivered on #openprojects or via "/msg memoserv send Editor [content]". All times on this page are UTC.
Have a great day!

Saturday was fairly quiet. Brief incidents here and there, some mildly painful. A bot run by admins of a very large channel began CTCP flooding, apparently it was a somewhat old release of eggdrop and had gotten cracked.
We've removed bear and zheng completely from the lineup until they can be restored by their sponsors. In addition, anderson was withdrawn by its sponsor. The user base for that server was not large but, as a local server in Denmark, it will be missed.
Press time this morning is extremely late, as befits a Sunday (even if it's only Saturday where your editor is :). The editor pleads the press of family life and a visit to the monthly meeting of the Open Projects Net users group in the San Francisco Bay area (California, US). If you live or work in the area or if you simply have a random urge, drop by #Bay-oh and meet the group when you get time.
No new contributions to the operating fund, but by our extremely late press time, Garrett LeSage of linux.com had provided us another set of attractive banners. Thanks, Garrett!
In development news, the "new tree" (dancer-hybrid) is falling behind as we apply more updates to the old, messy tree (dancer-hybrid-6). We did get a patch set to add in the debian directories and we'll take a look at that and probably regenerate the new tree with it. To work on key projects, including the dancer-hybrid conversion, please come by or click on #mistertoad.
Not much else to report. Keep assuming we will close the daily news out by 23:00, so that when our errant and very part-time editor gets his act together, your announcement or new channel notice will not miss going into that day's news. :) Please feel free to either drop by #openprojects or "/msg memoserv send Editor [content]". All times on the news page are UTC. Have a great morning!
